St David’s Day concert, 23rd April 2022 (MLC, Kew)

The James Tatoulis Auditorium at MLC’s Kew campus once again resounded to the wonderful songs and anthems from the Melbourne Welsh Male choir as we paid tribute in song to the anniversary of the Patron Saint of Wales Dewi Sant or Saint David.

Our guest artist, Samantha Hargreaves was the winner of the Choir’s Singer of the Year (SOTY) competition in 2021 which, as our supporters will know, had once again, because of COVID lockdown restrictions, to be judged on the competitors’ performances submitted via video. Based on her performance (which you can see elsewhere on the website) and her subsequent success with recent operatic roles, our audience at the St. David’s Day concert were in for a treat.

The choir was in good voice and presented some of the new material we have developed since we last performed at this venue, together with some of our traditional Welsh anthems which, with 50+ voices on stage, once again raised the roof!

Melbourne Welsh Male Choir has been delighted to be back at rehearsal every week and back on stage when we can. With the ongoing restrictions and uncertainties, we all appreciate the opportunity to join together in song.  We have an exciting and entertaining portfolio to perform this year, with many new songs and new members.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

If you are interested in joining the Choir, please do make contact.  We have several new members already this year and always welcome extra voices!  Joining is easy and very informal.  You will find a warm welcome and plenty of support as you learn the ropes (and a bit of Welsh!).

SOTY – Winner is announced

Twenty young singers entered the Singer of the Year 2020 competition.

It was an extraordinary field of talent this year and we are so very proud to be able to provide these young and aspiring singers with the chance to showcase their skills and compete for cash prizes.

The Choir has been running this competition for 27 years now and while many competitions have been cancelled or postponed, we were determined to continue despite the obvious inability to perform live.

We were delighted to announce the overall Winner on the 30th September, during the Choir Zoom rehearsal. It was a great event and we were very pleased to be joined by the three finalists: Emilia Bertolini, Lyla Levy-Jordan and Gabrielle Penney, as well as our guest adjudicator Jeanette Russell.

Watch the video for the full announcement. It is 35 minutes long, so grab a cuppa first. If you don’t have the time, you can always jump to the end…

“I Believe” – our second lockdown video

Melbourne Welsh Male Choir is proud to have released our second ‘lockdown’ video.

I Believe is a beautiful song, which celebrates the small things in life that bring us joy and hope. A drop of rain, a baby’s cry, flowers growing…  We are sure you will understand why we have chosen this song during such a challenging time for us all.

Watch the video and if you use Facebook, please Like or Share the post.

We are continuing to meet and rehearse as a Choir every Wednesday night.  We enjoy singing some familiar songs and are even learning some new ones that we are sure you will enjoy, when we can get back on stage.

Since we cannot perform live, online videos are our only opportunity to share our passion for singing!  We also feel strongly as a Choir that we want to somehow support the community we live in, during these difficult times.

Our first ‘lockdown’ video was a performance of ‘He ain’t heavy’ which was viewed online over 50,000 times. We hope you enjoy our second online performance and please share the video with friends and family.

Performances postponed

We have to advise that, because of the Covid-19 virus restrictions, all planned concerts and rehearsals have been suspended until such time as the crisis has passed – as it most surely will.

We are pleased to say that at this stage none of our members have been infected and we are hoping to keep it that way. In the interim this gives us an opportunity to tell you what we are doing to keep our choristers motivated and in good voice.

All choristers who have access to the internet (which is all but 2 in our choir) can access the choir’s website to access the scores and hear the music for their individual sectional parts (i.e. tenor, baritone etc.,) for all of our current repertoire.

In addition, our Music Director David Ashton-Smith is producing a weekly blog, to assist our choristers to get up to speed with current and future items in our repertoire, as well as tips for vocal exercises to maintain our singing capability. Our accompanist Simon Walters is producing piano tracks to enable choristers to practice with the piano accompaniment.

Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing you at our next performance. We will keep you informed about re-scheduled concerts through this website and our regular newsletters.

Ysbryd Y Nos

Pan ddaw lleisiau’s nos i’m hoeni
A sibrwd gwag y gwynt i’m hoeri
Ti sy’n lliwio’r blode,
a mantel gwlyth y bore
Tyrd ysbryd y nos
A’r tonnau’n llusgo’r cregyn arian
Yn sifrwd yn eu lifrai sedan
Mi wn y byddi ynno
Yn barod i’m cysuro,
Tyrd ysbryd y nos

Ysbryd y nos, tyrd yma’n awr
Gwasgara’r ofnau cyn daw’r wawr
Diffordd y t’wyllwch, tyrd a’r dydd
Gad i’m ddod o’r nos yn rhydd.

Pleth dy wallt mewn rhuban euraidd,
Yn gyness yn dy olau peraidd
A bysedd brau y barug
yn deffro hun y cerrig
Tyrd ysbryd y nos

Ysbryd y nos, tyrd yma’n awr
Gwasgara’r ofnau cyn daw’r wawr
Diffordd y t’wyllwch, tyrd a’r dydd
Gad i’m ddod o’r nos yn rhydd.

Ysbryd y nos rho d’olau mwyn.
Ysbryd y nos rho i’m dy swyn
Ysbryd y nos fel angel y dydd
Ysbryd y nos, enaid y pridd

Ac ynno yn y dyffryn tawel
Mi glywaf gan yn swn yr awel
A neges hud y geirier
yn hedfan dros y brnier
Tyrd ysbryd y nos

Ysbryd y nos, tyrd yma’n awr
Gwasgara’r ofnau cyn daw’r wawr
Diffordd y t’wyllwch, tyrd a’r dydd
Gad i’m ddod o’r nos yn rhydd.

Ysbryd y nos, tyrd yma’n awr
Gwasgara’r ofnau cyn daw’r wawr
Diffordd y t’wyllwch, tyrd a’r dydd
Gad i’m ddod o’r nos yn rhydd.
