Melbourne Welsh Male Choir
Melbourne Welsh Male Choir was formed in 1984 by a group of mainly Welsh migrants who wished to bring the culture of their homeland to their new home.
While maintaining the Welsh choral singing tradition the Melbourne Welsh Choir created its own unique “Australian” sound and style and continues to do so. Our patron – Alwyn Humphreys has said of the choir “it is the best Welsh choir heard outside of Wales”
At last: we celebrate Saint David’s Day.
A Celebration of St David’s Day with the Melbourne Welsh
After many postponements we were delighted to have finally put on two performances on December 4th.
It was great to get back on stage and sing as one, live and with an audience. Exhilarating, powerful, emotional, it had it all. Here’s to many more performances in 2022 and we look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
We hope that 2022 will be free of any new COVID dramas and that we will all be able to enjoy a year’s uninterrupted concert program of music and song together.
Upcoming Concert – St David’s Day concert at Methodist Ladies College in Kew Saturday 23rd April 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
The James Tatoulis Auditorium at MLC’s Kew campus will once again resound to the wonderful songs and anthems from the Melbourne Welsh Male choir as we pay tribute in song to the anniversary of the Patron Saint of Wales Dewi Sant or Saint David.
Our guest artist, Samantha Hargreaves is the winner of the Choir’s Singer of the Year (SOTY) competition in 2021 which, as our supporters will know, had once again, because of COVID lockdown restrictions, to be judged on the competitors’ performances submitted via video. Based on her performance (which can see by accessing the Choir’s website) and her subsequent success with recent operatic roles, our audience at the St. David’s Day concert are in for a treat.
Tickets for the afternoon concert commencing at 2:00 p.m. are available via TryBooking or from any member of the choir.
The auditorium is quite intimate, with a maximum of 350 seats, so be sure to book early to avoid disappointment. The choir is in good voice and we look forward to presenting some of the new material we have developed since we last performed at this venue, together with some of our traditional Welsh anthems which with 50+ voices on stage is likely to raise the roof.
If you are interested in joining the Choir, please do make contact. We have several new members already this year despite the restrictions and always welcome extra voices! Joining is easy and very informal. You will find a warm welcome and plenty of support as you learn the ropes (and a bit of Welsh!).
Who are we?
We are a group of men of varying ages and backgrounds who share a love of singing in the Welsh choral tradition.
As you can see from the photographs, we have a lot of experience in the choir.
The photos show the gentlemen of the choir grouped by voice section – Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Baritone and Bass. The importance of the section depends on the section you belong to.
For us, the quality of the singing we produce for our audiences is critical and we derive immense pleasure from the feedback we get. However what is also critical is the overall health benefits for all of from involvement with a great bunch of blokes.
A little more about us
The youngest of the Welsh Male choirs in Victoria was formed in 1984 by a group of mainly Welsh migrants who wished to bring the culture of their homeland to their new home.
While maintaining the Welsh choral singing tradition the Melbourne Welsh Choir created its own unique “Australian” sound and style and continues to do so. Our patron – Alwyn Humphreys has said of the choir “it is the best Welsh choir heard outside of Wales”
As befits any forward thinking organisation, the choir accepts choristers from any part of the world and sings music from all parts of the music spectrum from African protest chants like “Senzenina” or a New Zealand lullaby such as “Hine e Hine” to rock songs like “Somebody to love” or Mozart’s “Missa Solemnis” (which the choir sang in Salzburg).
Within this website we hope to give you a glimpse of what our audiences, prospective clients and prospective choristers can expect to experience.
